Prémio Secil de Arquitectura de 2008, Nuno Brandão Costa tem “alguma dificuldade” em achar que um projecto é ou pode ser “mais interessante” do que outro. Cada qual é como é. No caso das escolas, há duas coisas que o agradam particularmente, para além do próprio público-alvo: as crianças. “Estamos a fazer um edifício que fica para a memória — todos nós nos lembramos das nossas escolas — e, por outro lado, vai contribuir para a formação.” Que o digam as crianças que hoje estudam na Escola EBI/JI do Padrão , finalizada em 2011 em Matosinhos. Aqui, os miúdos “vão para a escola, mas é como se fossem para a quinta, para um sítio próprio, só deles”. O projecto com que o arquitecto venceu o concurso lançado pela Câmara de Matosinhos baseia-se na ideia de protecção, de conceber um ambiente controlado para miúdos mais pequenos. Ao contrário da Escola de Chaves, que se abre para a cidade, esta tem um muro contínuo, de tijolo à vista, para, espera o arquitecto, transmitir a ideia de uma quinta. “Sai do ambiente urbano” e cria “um universo interior” numa escola que não tem cá escadas ou elevadores — é plana e tem uma horta, que se avista da cantina.
